When I went down with the “fishing bug” some 24 years ago, it was hard for me to try new things. I pretty much used the same gear that I grew comfortable with and threw the same old spinnerbaits & crankbaits each and every time out. Although there are many “tried and true” baits out there that I still keep in my arsenal, I’m a much more accomplished angler since I “forced” myself to change with the times and learn the latest techniques.
It seems that there are new innovations in freshwater fishing all the time, and it certainly does benefit one to pay attention to those changes and give ‘em a try. Example:
Just last week I posted about froggin’ and the hooks that I use when using these topwater weapons. I’ve used that XPoint 4, 5 or 6/0 EWG hook (or something similar) for a very long time and it’s performed very well over the years. But to my amazement, the good folks at Uncle Josh Bait Co., talked me into trying their version of a “frog hook” when I placed my last Sizmic Frog order and I AM SOLD!
Not only does the Sizmic Toad Hook “hook-up” more consistently with each bite, it also prolongs the frogs and allows me to get MANY more casts with each bait before having to change frogs. Check ‘em out at www.unclejoshbaits.com
Once again, listening to manufacturer’s suggestions has helped me hook-up more and save money doing it! Bottom line: This “Old Dog” is still payin’ attention to innovation, and in-turn, it’s making me a better angler.
Until next time: There’s no such thing as ONE smallmouth!
